High blood sugar is one of the leading indicators of pre-diabetes and, according to the CDC, it is estimated that 1 of every 3 adults has it, and most of them don’t even know that they do. This can cause full-blown diabetes, requiring an aggressive diabetes treatment plan, but there are things you can do to avoid this.

Avoid or Manage Stress

Stress causes the release of cortisol, a hormone that increases the level of blood sugar in your system to give you the necessary energy to deal with the “flight or flight” reaction presented by the stress. If you are constantly under stress, this can create blood sugar regulation issues even if you are controlling the sugar in your diet. Consider taking up meditation. Studies have shown that diabetics with high blood sugar levels lowered them, as well as lowered their blood pressure after just a month of regular meditation practice.

Avoid Highly Processed Grains

Most processed grains are carbohydrates which break down into glucose within your body. Carbs are not always a bad thing, as long as they are high quality and have some additional nutritional value. Grains that are highly processed such as pastas, breads like white bread, and cereals that have little whole grains in them are very bad for diabetics. If you want to eat grains, stick to those that are whole grains and have no added sugar, such as brown rice, oatmeal and quinoa.

Get Quality Sleep

If you are getting diabetes treatment, be sure to mention to your doctor if you are having trouble getting enough sleep. Sleeping too little or not getting quality sleep can decrease your insulin sensitivity. Poor sleep might be an indicator of sleep apnea, which can be treated to improve the quality of your sleep.
