Water makes it easier for the heart to pump blood throughout the body. It also helps the heart and other muscles to work more efficiently. Without proper hydration, heat-stroke and many other life-threating conditions can develop.
In 2004, the Institute of Medicine changed its water intake recommendations. Their new recommendations say women over 19 need about 11 cups of water daily, while men need about 16 cups.
For optimal health, humans may need more fluids than that. They recommend people get about 20% of their daily water intake from fruits, vegetables, beverages and other foods.
The Hydration Habit
Staying properly hydrated helps people focus, operate more efficiently and maintain good energy levels. Get in the habit of drinking water regularly. Keep a bottle of water within arm’s reach, whether at home or at work and sip it periodically. Drink water if you feel frazzled or hazy. Drinking a mug full of herbal tea each evening also helps. Eat a diet containing many fruits, vegetables and other water-rich foods. Elderly people should fill a liter bottle with water each morning and finish it before they go to bed at night.
